This print appeared as a frontispiece to the book "Bowdoin Poets" edited by Edward P. Weston and published by Joseph Griffin. Several editions of this book appeared after 1840, with several different frontispieces. This version was printed by Lane & Scott. It was first attributed to Lane and given the date of c.1845 by John Wilmerding in his 1964 book, "Fitz Hugh Lane."
Recent research indicates that the lithograph was published with the 1849 edition of the book, although probably printed in 1848, when the firm of Lane & Scott was still operating under that name. Also, the buildings of the college give some indication as to the date. The church on the far left has a square tower, which was replaced with a steeple in 1848. The building on the right was started in 1846.

Lane & Scott's Lithography was a Boston-based firm formed by Fitz Henry Lane and John W. A. Scott. The partnership spanned 1844–48, after both artists had apprenticed for prominent Boston lithographer, William Pendleton. The firm was located at 16 Tremont Temple, Boston and created sheet music covers, book illustrations, advertisements, prints, and town views. Lane left the firm around 1847 or 1848 and Scott printed some works under his own name.
This information has been summarized from Boston Lithography 1825–1880 by Sally Pierce and Catharina Slautterback.
