Commentary
Among the large collection of Lane's drawings held by the Cape Ann Museum, only a few have the kind of sketchbook informality of this drawing. On one side there are three cows, a small landscape study, and the portico of a federal-style front door (long mistaken for a temple). On the other side of the sheet Lane sketched two carts. It is also interesting that he used pen, which seems to be rare in his work.
